Close to the banks of the Chao Phraya River, not far from Wat Arun, the temple of the Dawn, is Wat Prayoon. Kickboxer Part 1 (1989)

The story follows Kurt Sloan, a cornerman for his brother Eric (Dennis Alexio), an American kickboxing champion. Kurt and Eric travel to Bangkok to take on Tong Po (Michel Qissi), the Thailand champion. However, Kurt and Eric quickly discover that they are outmatched by Tong Po after the first round. However, Eric is too stubborn to give up and returns for round two despite Kurt's urging not to. Eric continues to take a vicious beating, prompting Kurt to throw in the towel. Rather than stop the fight, Tong Po continues and brutally paralyzes Eric in the ring. Kurt vows to avenge his brother and defeat Tong Po in the ring, and goes to a remote area in Thailand to train with a famous trainer, Xian Chow, who helps him master the art of Muay Thai ("Thai boxing"). As he becomes more and more powerful, local Thai mobsters worry that he'll interfere in their work in underground kickboxing and force him into a death match against Tong Po. In what they call the "ancient way" the contestants wrap their hands in hemp rope, coat the rope with resin, and then dip their hands in broken glass to make their hands deadly weapons. In an epic final battle Tong Po and Kurt face off, and in the end Kurt beats Po, victory and vengeance now his.

Thailand - Arrival in Bangkok

I went to the Jazz festival as intended with a friend in his vehicle and we had a terrific weekend, He knew that I was going to Thailand the next day and he was surprised that I was going so far at the drop of a hat. So was I actually, but I did not say anything.

That evening, when I got back home, I did my laundry, put it in the tumble-dryer and walked up to the pub to ask a friend to keep an eye on my house while I was gone. An hour later, I was back home packing and full of expectation for what tomorrow would bring. I did not sleep a wink, but it was an afternoon flight so I was not worried. Furthermore, the prospects of a twelve-hour flight offered more than enough opportunity to sleep and I also thought it might assist me get over jet lag, but I was not sure if I was working it out the correct way or not.

The appointed hour to depart arrived later than sooner and the taxi took me the short distance to the airport, where I had another two-hour wait. Still, at least I could see progress and after checking in and buying a newspaper, I made my way to the bar, from where I could watch the planes coming and going. I ordered a pint of Guinness and tried to read the paper.

No good. So I decided to send mobile text messages to everyone I knew. That helped and then I sent one to the friend who had recommended I go to Thailand. He had gone out a few days before and he said that he would meet me in the bar below my room at 6pm Thai time.

That was a consolation too, although I knew that I would have to make my own way the 165km from the airport to where he was in Pattaya, Chon Buri. Just south-east of Bangkok. A long-haul flight is a long-haul flight and they are boring as far as I am concerned, but one thing that brightened it up was the service and food. I was on the Atkins diet at the time and when I had booked, I had ticked for special meals. They did not have a box for Atkins so I put 'diabetic'. Well, I was served first every time, had lovely food and every twenty minutes someone would ask me if I wanted anything. The best service I have ever had.

We arrived in Don Muang Airport, Bangkok at about 4pm in July and it was baking, but all right. The airport was a doddle; I picked up my bag and headed for the outside. I was instantly struck by the hub-bub and quantity of vehicles. It was bewildering with dozens of people trying to get me to go in their taxi. Being new to Asia and trying to be polite, I tried to tell each of them individually 'no thank you', but I was losing badly. I had been instructed where to go on arrival, so I walked on and said nothing. It was easier. Out the left-hand exit to the street, onto the pavement and to the taxi kiosk, where they give guaranteed prices to any destination.

That worked too and I was soon in a taxi and on my way. I had been told to pay no more than 2,000 Baht and that is what I was charged.

Things to Do in Vientiane

I recently visited Vientiane which is the capital city of Laos and I was definitely positively surprised by the charming and somewhat unique destination.

There is a heavy French influence in this city and together with the Asian atmosphere it creates a lovely environment.It is a relatively small city and cannot be compared in size to Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur but it does have a lot of historic and cultural sights which tourists can visit.

Buddha Park

The Buddha Park is located just outside of the city and it is filled with Buddhist images and art pieces. Some of the older items date back over five hundred years ago. This attraction is open daily from 09:00 until 16:00.

Lao National Museum

The premier place to learn more about the history and culture of Laos is at the excellent Lao National Museum. A lot of attention is also paid to the general Mekong region and the Hmong which are the local tribe's people. You will also find a lot of information about the various different wars in which the country has been involved. The Lao National Museum is open to the public daily from 08:00 until 12:00 and from 13:00 until 16:00.

Hin Khana Waterfalls

The Hin Khana Waterfalls is a very popular destination for both local residents as well as tourists. Many local citizens visit this attraction with their family for picnics and lots of activities. There is a wonderful area for swimming and you will find plenty of stands and other hawkers selling a wide range of food items and beverages. You can enter the area daily from 09:00 until 18:00.

Ho Phra Keo

One of the most impressive temples in Vientiane is the Ho Phra Keo temple. It was constructed nearly five hundred years ago by King Xaisetathirat. A wonderful museum is housed inside Ho Phra Keo which displays a lot of historic religious and cultural Lao artifacts

Golf Courses

If you enjoy playing golf then there are a number of well maintained and rather inexpensive golf courses which you can visit during your vacation. One of the most popular golf courses in Vientiane is the KM6 course which is visited by many of the local expats.

The allure of a visit to Thailand is an intense one due to its varied enticing elements.

Thailand is unique with its mix of friendly smiling people, ancient culture and religious artifacts, lush landscapes, great beaches and modern metropolis. It is difficult to cull the list of fascinating destinations to see in Thailand to a mere handful but here is an attempt to offer some requirements during your visit.

Bangkok is the capital of Thailand and one of the world's great cities. Bangkok is a modern city with world famous nightlife, world class restaurants and fabulous shopping. It also is the home to some of the most important Buddhist temples and relics in the world. These include Wat Phra Kaeo (Emerald Buddha Chapel), Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn), Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha), Wat Saket (Golden Mount), and Wat Benchannabophit (Marble Temple).

Chiang Mai is north of Bangkok and is in a green valley surrounded by mountains. It is well known for its Arts & Culture Center, many museums, beautiful Buddhist temples and two elephant sanctuaries. This is also a well known area to study Thailand's delicious cuisine through numerous cooking schools.

Ko Tao is an island in the Gulf of Thailand in the southern part of the country. It is a world famous scuba and snorkel destination where you can swim with turtles, stingray, barracuda and even whale sharks. Other beach destinations include Phuket, Hat Khao Lak, Ko Mak, Ko Kut, Ko Pha-Ngan and Hat Phra Nang.

Ayutthaya is the ancient capital of Thailand and is about 85 km north of Bangkok. It is a world heritage site known for its historic Buddhist temples, museums and parks. Important sites to see here include Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Ancient Palace Chao Sam Phraya Museum and Phra Ram Park. Ban Chiang located in the northeaster part of Thailand and is another world heritage site and is considered to contain some of the world's oldest Bronze Age artifacts.

One of the best times to visit Thailand is during its cool season which runs from November to the end of February. The weather is warm, with temperatures averaging about 30 degrees Celsius 85 Fahrenheit but with low humidity and clear skies. This is Thailand's peak tourist period.

Some important national holidays are Magha Puja which is celebrated at the full moon in February. Monks and others bear flowers, incense and candles and circle the countries temples after sunset. The Songkran Festival is April 12 - 14. This is the Thai traditional New Year's festival and a great place to experience it is in Chiang Mai. Visaka Puja is the most holy day for Buddhists as it celebrates the birth of Buddha. It is celebrated in May at the full moon.

Avoid the Boredom on a Maldives Holidays

I regularly take calls from potential clients keen to visit the Maldives but worried that more than a week will drive them to distraction. As you probably know The Maldives are predominantly small unspoilt and natural islands offering guests the opportunity to experience a world largely untouched by commercialism, so many clients feel that after a few days of tranquility and relaxation they are ready to try something else. Enter the Multi Center Holiday! There are several airlines that fly to both the UK and one of the surrounding destinations to the Maldives so combining both locations in one holiday saves money on the flights and has the benefit of making you feel as if you have been on two holidays.

Maldives and Dubai - Emirates Airlines are the National Airlines of the UAE and based rather conveniently in Dubai, half way between the UK and the Maldives. All the Emirates Airlines flights stop in Dubai on the way out and back to the Maldives giving us as travellers the opportunity to stop over en route and experience what it has to offer. The flights from the UK are from Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham and both Gatwick and Heathrow to Dubai taking approximately 6 hours before connecting on to the Maldives, a short 4 hours away.

Dubai offers a totally different experience from the Maldives and whilst is can't beat the Maldives for beaches it does have a lot to offer and well worth a short stop especially as your flying through the airport. Dubai is a man made, vibrant, high raised city by the beach. Its filled with hotels of all standards, restaurants, bars and an unsurpassed level of customer service. The hotels have been compared to the glitz of Las Vegas as so many are theming themselves to offer something different from the neighbouring hotel and competitor. More importantly Dubai is an eclectic blend of the Western and Arabic culture and customs.

Maldives and Sri Lanka - Although close to the Maldives, Sri Lanka is a world apart, from these tiny unspoilt islands. Sri Lanka is the same size as Ireland and full of wildlife and beautiful scenery with a wealth of history.

You could choose to stay on one of Sri Lanka's beaches and experience the change in culture, or combine the Maldives with a Sri Lankan Safari - the wildlife is excellent here especially in Yala National Park renown for the tigers or perhaps undertake a classical Sri Lankan tour with car and driver taking in all the highlights in this largely unspoilt country. Its important you look at the foreign office web site to keep yourself up to date on the troubles that have taken place in the very north of Sri Lanka, its not an area that benefits from tourism but by reading the foreign office web site you'll get the up to date picture. Sri Lankan Airlines operates a direct service taking 12 hours between Heathrow and the Maldives several times a week and also a daily service between Heathrow and Colombo taking aprox 9 hours and Colombo and the Maldives, a further 2 hours which makes Sri Lanka and the maldives a very attractive combination. Its also a very effective way of lengthening your holiday from a 10 night holiday to a 14 nights holiday as accommodation in Sri lanka is half the cost of the accommodation in the Maldives allowing you to add a few extra days for very little money.

Maldives and Kerela - Long Sandy beaches, scenic spice and tea plantations. Extensive and fascinating backwaters describe the idyllic coast state of Kerela. Kerela is famous though out India for is therapeutic expertise in Ayurvediac treatments and most hotels have excellent Spa's.

Maldives and Bangkok, - Here is your opportunity to combine the Thailand with the Maldives. Bangkok represent the exoticism of the east, a lively mixture of both the ancient and the modern. Bangkok has retained its traditional charm amidst the disco's, bars, nigh markets and heavy traffic. An exotic city with glittering temples, culture and warmth.

Maldives and Singapore - Sri Lankan Airlines based in Colombo half way between these two destinations offer a superb service from Heathrow down to the Maldives and across to Singapore giving you to chance to combine the Maldives with the garden city. A bustling mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian races cultures and cuisines. Singapore offers fabulous shopping, plenty of sightseeing and a large variety of restaurants to choose from.

A great tip when planning your trip is to look at a map of where the Maldives is located, its likely that the surrounding countries will operate flights to and from and so logistically it will be possible and if cost is important then selecting the locations that the aircraft has to stop in is always a good bet.

The Jim Thompson House & Museum, Bangkok, Thailand

Jim Thompson settled in Bangkok after Word War II. His home was the talk of Bangkok when he built it. Today it is like an oasis in the centre of Bangkok with the lush, cool gardens and peaceful setting. The house, built in Thai style, has a wonderful collection of art work and original silk screen prints. If you're in Bangkok you have to go. The history is fascinating, the house is a work of art and the tropical gardens are a haven of peace and tranquility.

Bangkok - Top 10 Must-See Sights

Grand Palace

This is the archetypal Thailand tourist sight. Going to Thailand and not visiting the Grand Palace would be like visiting Windsor castle and not stopping by to have tea with the Queen (or something). The architecture is superb, the treasures (such as the famous Emerald buddha) breathtaking, the atmosphere uncannily "un-Western", you feel like you really have arrived in Asia as you walk around the Palace taking in the sights and smells.

Wat Pho

Wat Pho is another astonishing temple. This is a real working temple, with a traditional medicine centre and a massage school (you can learn how to do a Thai massage there). I'm a massive fan of Thai massage and can vouch for its effectiveness. Having suffered back pain for over 13 years it was completely eliminated after one Thai massage session and has never given trouble since. Quite incredible. Wat Pho is a fascinating place with lots of nooks and crannies to explore and some substantial treasures such as the Reclining Buddha statue.

Wat Arun

Less glamorous than the previous two Wats, Wat Arun is, however, often the sight that appears on those haunting postcards showing a Wat at sunrise or sunset - perhaps with a mist rolling up the Chao Phraya river. In fact, sunrise (or more typically sunset) is the best time to enjoy the ancient splendour of this ancient Wat. The architectural detail of the Wat is nothing short of amazing - take a boat trip there and enjoy the views from the river.

Oriental Hotel

Some would argue the Oriental Bangkok is the best hotel in the world. While that may have been true 10 years ago, that claim may be less valid today, but is not without considerable merit. While for most of us staying in the Oriental is a little beyond our budget, you can still enjoy the splendour of this fine hotel by spending an evening there. There is much to recommend it. You can sit by the river and enjoy some drinks (and a cooling river breeze), or book one of the fantastic evening dinners, complete with entertainment such as Thai dancing and music. Dinner is taken at traditional Thai "tables" - where you are effectively sitting in the ground and the food is more or less at floor level - fascinating stuff.

As you walk through the Oriental, don't forget to take a look around and especially up - the beautiful architecture of this hotel, built in 1876, is to be savoured.

Baiyoke Sky Hotel

Bangkok is a pretty stunning city with many strangely shaped and very tall buildings. The tallest is the Baiyoke Tower. It's an amazing building and you can't help to notice it on the taxi journey from the airport to downtown Bangkok. The Sky Hotel has a cafe and bar at the very top, which non-residents can use. There is live entertainment, good food and the views can't be beaten.

Mahboonkrong shopping centre (MBK)

MBK is a very famous shopping centre in Bangkok and deservedly so. It is an amazing "Aladdin's Cave" of products. Electrical, t-shirts, cameras, DVDs, CDs, souvenirs, coffee shops, watches, phones...they can all be found in MBK and lots more besides. There is also a whole floor devoted to restaurants...everything from Japanese to Thai to Western and everything in between.

As well as being a great venue for shopping, MBK is also a great place for people watching. Just find a cafe, get yourself an iced tea and relax!

Jim Thompson's House

Jim Thompson is a very well known character in Thailand, not least due to his mysterious disappearance while walking in the Cameron Highlands of Malaysia. Conspiracy theories abound and involvement of the CIA is rumoured. What is known is that Jim Thompson is credited with re-generating the Thai Silk market and becoming a very successful and rich businessman in the process. Jim Thompson was also an avid collector of Thai cultural artifacts, which are still to be seen in his house, which is open to the public. The house is the traditional Thai house style.

The house is also a museum and is one of the most interesting places in Bangkok in my opinion. the architecture and design of the house is amazing and the interiors and breathtaking.

This is an absolutely must-see venue.

Chinatown

There is a very significant Chinese influence in Thailand - many Thais are descended from Chinese immigrants. As such Bangkok has a huge Chinatown, much bigger and more spectacular that either the Chinatowns of San Francisco or London in my opinion.

It's a great place to eat - there are so many restaurants and food stalls to choose from that the best thing to do is just go there and find a place you like the look of. There are also many vendors along the streets and you can buy all manner of souvenirs. I really like buying the distinctly Chinese style products such as mirrors, lanterns and religious items.

Make sure you take your camera - there will be many photo opportunities.

Dusit Park

Sometimes it's nice to get away from the hectic pace of life in Bangkok and dusit Park provides a beautiful and relaxing destination. There's a lot to the park, as well as the beautiful gardens there are several museums on site, including the King Bhumibol Photographic museums, the Ancient Cloth and Silk Museum and the Rank and Portrait Museum. They are a lot more interesting than they sound! The lakeside pavilion is also not to be missed.

Floating Market

The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is the best of the floating markets. It is located around 60 miles out of Bangkok, so is a bit of a trek, but it is worth it as most of the nearer floating markets in Bangkok are just tourist traps and unpleasant places to visit. This market has retained something of its original character. It's possible to get organised tours out of Bangkok to go there if you don't want to make your own way there.

5 Great Things to Do in Thailand

It's a challenge to fit everything you want to do in Thailand into your holiday. There are so many options for a holiday in this stunning Asian country that you'll never have enough time to get them all done! To help you out, I've put together this short list of suggestions. You'll certainly be able to fit a couple of these five activities in on a standard two week holiday.

1. Explore the countryside

Even if you're spending your holiday in Bangkok, it's worth spending some time in the countryside too. You'll be surprised how close the country is to the city, making it easy to spend a day away from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok. You can explore along the canals, called "klong" in Thai, and gaze at the beautiful Thai landscape. There are many orchids in the wild for avid photographers and you can even visit an agricultural cooperative to learn more about traditional Thai farming.

2. Learn traditional Thai massage

If you're heading to Thailand on a romantic holiday or even for your honeymoon, learning traditional Thai massage could be the perfect way to amp up your romantic time together. You can practice your new skills on each other even after the lesson is over. Thai massage is usually done with the participants fully clothed and no oil is involved. The masseuse typically uses all part of his or her body - knuckles, elbows, knees, and even feet - to massage you in a variety of different almost yoga-like positions. It's different but will still provide you the same relaxed, happy feeling you'd get after an ordinary massage.

3. Ride an elephant

Surely riding an elephant will be a new experience for you, and it's one that you can't have many other places! If you love animals, consider heading to Anantara for a one to three day mahout training camp. You'll learn from the experts on how to drive, feed, and bathe the elephants. What Exactly Is a "Day Spa Vacation?"
