The lying Buddha, Temple of the giant golden Buddha statues are located on the banks of the historic Chao Phraya river.

Bangkok has always been an attraction for tourists, and this is why a lot of foreigners who are found to have settled in this beautiful city. Many of them have found work and then there are still others have started their ownCompanies to earn a living. There are still others that are expensive Western countries come to spend their life after retirement for a life at low cost, easy and comfortable in this hospitable city.

The nightlife offers a varied program of entertainment for the people and is considered one of the main attractions of Bangkok. There are clubs and bars for the rich, bars and pubs for those on a budget. A street in the district of Phra Nakhon, as is known Khao San Road, is consideredThe first international route, where all kinds of people from different parts of the world can be seen.

Former Bangkok used to be a network of canals, Khlong as they knew, and these were used by people to carry them from one place to another. Now, most of the channels are converted into streets. However, there are still some channels to see, but unfortunately most of them are not cleaned.

The movements of hands - what they mean in different countries

For those traveling abroad, take into account not only necessary, language barriers, but also body language. Different cultures use different body language, for example, the distance between two people when they conduct a conversation.

Part of the body language gestures. Gestures mean different things in different countries. Some people realize the hard way. What exactly does the V-sign (two fingers in the air is incorporated) mean? It means that you take me two beers and it was consideredan insult?

Signs commonly used as a thumbs up. In the United States, this usually means' great, awesome or whatever. There will also be a sign of approval, but stronger than a sign OK. Now this is a very common interpretation, but it is not the only one. It may have the same meaning in Australia, but if you do it and switch it can be a very serious offense. In Turkey, it is not used at all.

A circle with your thumb and forefinger in the United States is OK, well, well. You can use it toas an endorsement. In Turkey, it means that someone is homosexual. In Australia is equal to zero. Germany has done a good job or a serious accident, it can all depends on which region you visit. New Zealand is seen as a way of saying cheese, OK, but not much used.

The importance of gestures varies between different parts of the country and also between cultural groups and between generations. The above is only generalizations and may not be correct for a particular person.

A simple and easy guide to rent a service apartment in Bangkok, Thailand

What are the best areas of Bangkok to rent? What facilities and services you can expect from an apartment in Bangkok serviced? What are the best and worst serviced apartments in Bangkok? Reading to find out the answers to these questions and more, and in my simple guide to renting a serviced apartment in Bangkok for Migrants and Itinerant People.

Bangkok is the center of the south-east Asia

As the commercial center of Thailandand the center of business and pleasure in Southeast Asia has excellent hotels Bangkok of all types of catering, the elite business travelers and casual.

Recently, a new type of accommodation was won favor short-stay business traveler in Bangkok - the luxury apartment. With greater economic expansion in recent years, residence quickly become the preferred choice of life style of low costLuxury.

What is a residence?

The part of the equation usually refers served daily or twice weekly cleaning of rooms, furniture, kitchen facilities and so on, that does not include normal homes. Some service apartments, a hotel, and these are called Residence.

What's Hot Bangkok Serviced Apartments?

Relocation and real estate agents believe Bangkok is the mostNumber of stylish apartments offer the world has. It's not just one or two luxury apartments, but close to 50 This is because skilled labor is cheap in Thailand, and the city itself is an important commercial node for the region of Southeast Asia.

Renting a serviced apartment in Bangkok can be a difficult task for several reasons - the first is that there are so many "small print" and the additional costs involved when signing a weekly, monthly or annual contract.

IHe lives in Bangkok for several years, and have gone beyond a certain number of apartments, are learning along the way, the "Services" included in the price and what you expect from your stay in Bangkok.

Bangkok 's City Plan

The Bangkok Jungle has several meanings, one of which is that the city was never built "embedded" with a map or urban design in mind. The city is an uneven landscape, a montage of residential and commercial mixed oneanother. It is the home of 10 to 15 million people, depending on who comes from the rural home and abroad. People as well as from poor to rich, living side by side.

The city itself is one way, if you look a main road in Bangkok, you'll see that both sides of the road Arent balanced building heights vary, and there is a general lack of symmetry. That makes Bangkok unique and charming. And what makes it a jungle.

The BestAreas To Live In Bangkok

Bangkok has found cost exclusive apartments, but the best are in the following areas in Bangkok:

Sukhumvit, the main road or artery of Bangkok

Asok, one of the most exclusive and expensive to live

Thong Lo, the street smart, trendy

Sathorn, the business district of Bangkok

Silom, another business, and Red Light District

Ploenchit, business district

Chit Lom, the business district, the areas listed above are all within easy access to shops, restaurants, entertainment, train, skytrain and expressways. If you live in one of these sites, there are life in the heart of Bangkok s' thriving business and shopping centers during our experience in a private apartment ultra served in Bangkok. I personally recommend Asok and Chit Lom, since are the areas most elegant> Bangkok, but if you look closely at the night markets Silom perfect, and Sukhumvit is always a colorful.

Facilities and services typical of Bangkok Serviced Apartments

These vary between the different types of apartments and condominiums, but a level of excellence has been establlished the growing competition between the apartments. Facilities and services are upgraded regularly to stay current with rival residences. But before investing in a flat service, you should check if these services and facilities are available.

5 services that should be included for free:

Room Cleanliness

Water / Utilities

Internet

24 Hour Security

Room service / bellhop
4 facilities, which should be included

Restaurant

Gym

Pool

Convenience Store
TheLoopholes: duration, Deposits and Electricity

If you stay for a month or a year, the residence may apply for electricity. Be sure to negotiate the price to 6.5 Baht / unit. A lot of times the apartment owners charge 8 Baht / Unit for more profit. You pay only 3 or 4 Baht / unit.

Be careful when signing the lease, requiring most have 2 months of filing, and if you move before the contract is completed, the deposit is forfeited.

Ensure thatResidence has a laundry service, whether at home or away. Most apartments have coin operated laundry and pick up services. More deluxe suites have a washing machine in the room. Note that most places do not dry.

How much do I pay?

This is a difficult question to answer, but the structures plus a flat service desires will cost even more. If a residence has a swimming pool, a gym and also functions as a 24 Hour hotel, then the monthly price will be more than 30,000 baht.

Position has also to do a large portion of the costs for an apartment in Bangkok service. If you live in an area not close to skytrain or subway access, the price will be much lower. Instead, stay in the business district of Silom or trendy items, like Ekkamai Thonglor or increase the monthly rent.

Residence Which should I choose?

The market for serviced apartments> Bangkok is managed by three groups, the president of the group, the Ascott Group and Center Point. Most of them offer first class accommodation and have a decent system of serving their customers. However, there are many independent apartments to choose from.

The 2 Worst Serviced Apartments in Bangkok

Ascott Bangkok Sathorn There are several articles in professional journals written for the decline in service at once famous and has beenmost prestigious residences in Bangkok. Once the attention of the customer relationship is known, is their lack of it is now clear to everyone that stays there. This site is an example of a chain of serviced apartments still too similar to a company without a human touch of service.
Lebua Rumor is their staff is very reliable. Read the newspapers and 'the residence of Google' permission to vote.

Top 2 most luxurious Bangkok ServicedApartments

Siri Sathorn Apartments Siri Sathorn is a five star luxury "boutique" of private property and elegant life in a residential embodies. This is a concept of the perfect home that appeals to the international traveler. This place offers Japanese clientelle but of course, is open to all.
Fraser Place Urbana Langusan you have an exclusive 45-meter ramp from the main road to the residence for privacy lot. They also have some ofthe best services and the customer experience I've ever had, ruining the only word that comes to mind is

Best Value Bangkok Serviced Apartments

Silom New Covent Garden in November 2006 opened, this chic apartment is in the service area of Silom Sathorn, but has some of the cheapest rates for this commercial district and night market. For 36,000 baht / $ 1000 per month, you can create a 38 square meter, 1 bedroom, fully furnished luxury apartment complete with fully equipped kitchen, washing machine, flat screen TV, shower and rain. The only drawback is the location does not have a pool or gym, but that's why the price is so low and why its one of the best values in Bangkok.

If you're still undecided whether to stay in Bangkok has your next trip, it was announced recently that plans for Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), Bangkok, in a "paradise" of the city. The article by> Bangkok Post carries the BMA is a fund in the trash, pollution and create traffic problems. Now it's time for your next vacation or business trip to Bangkok is to take what life is not to get better in the City of Angels!

The beauty of Thailand - a must place to visit for all travelers

I doubt if you've never heard of Thailand. Each of us has already heard the pieces in this little kingdom, despite all the disasters and political upheavals. It 'still one of the most interesting you want to visit.

Thailand is in Southeast Asia. A Buddhist country, its citizens between 80 and 90 percent Buddhist. If you are familiar with or see the movie "King and I", you have a better understanding of what I say.

The size of thisEarth is the same as Texas in the United States, or similar to France. Its area is about 510,000 sq. km. The population is approximately 65 million citizens. To the north and west is Myanmar, Laos and North-east, while in the east and Cambodia and Malaysia to the south.

Thailand is in 7 regions, the north-east, is one of North, Central Plains, West, East and Metropolitan Bangkok divided region. This region has its own different geographicalNature.

VS Tours Vacation Packages Luxury travel

So you've decided to book a luxury holiday. It's time to call your travel agent. The first question most travel agents ask is: "Are you interested in booking a cruise, a tour or a package tour?" You know that cruises are not for you, but what about a tour? And what exactly is the difference between a tour and a travel package anyways? With different definitions and inclusions, it is important for every traveler, be sufficiently informed to do sobest decision for their individual needs.

Definitions

If you are thinking of booking a trip permit for your luxury holiday, remember that "tour" means many things. First of all, a tour takes place in order and consists of a group of other tourists. A package holiday is usually a combination of flights, transfers, hotel and car rental. If you prefer, you can count on smaller tours, which normally add in a group or guided.

Rates

A tour is usually a really good deal. You get in better hotels in the area of residence, and in most cases it is usually more of a hotel. All your transportation is included, as to and from the airport and transfer to all local attractions and tours. All maps are calculated, the attraction of money, so you do not pay entrance fees to museums or exhibitions. There are other excursions, which can be purchasedbut usually at a reasonable price. Most package tours are also some meals. With your luxury travel vacation package that includes all expenses, fees and taxes of your air, hotel and car rental. Sometimes we are the availability of special breakfast is free for a tour of the city, but is not the norm.

Studies of destination and personal preferences

How good is if you book a visit towards a vacation? It 'really depends on theTarget and its personal preference. If you plan to vacation in a city like Rome or Paris, there's lots to see and do here that travelers better places to live and most of the shares included in the price. But if you want these cities just to bask in the incredible atmosphere to visit, and you still have an interest in the tour of attraction "main," a travel package for luxury vacations for you. You would not want a guided tourJamaica or Hawaii. Chances are, you just want to bathe in the sun and relax. Consider where you are going and what you do in your vacation.

Now that you know the facts, it is time to take a decision. Looking at the definitions, a tour and a travel package for luxury vacations to offer anything different. They all cost a bit 'differently and have different inclusions. So it happens to you and where to go. It is likely that your travel agentcan control the best choice for your travel needs, but now we know why and you can decide for themselves.

Thailand is safe to visit?

How long resident in Thailand, I have some knowledge in Thailand, although not safe for visitors or those that will be long term.

Usually there are multiple instances of unsafe acts is in the country anytime you want. I want the main areas in which foreigners must take extra precautions to stay safe during their stay review.

Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, is Ground Zero for political movements. The country has not seen stability politically in a very long time. Some would say that has never been stable in modern times. Currently, there are groups of red shirt and yellow shirt of the groups that are in opposition. The army sometimes enters military coups and periods - and there's still fighting - sometimes fatal, as the groups are compared, and try to change the power relationships that exist. This is a constant struggle, and there is little to be transmitted to the power at the moment, there are always problems in> Bangkok.

The problems are compounded when police and military have been ordered through the streets like ... occasionally pushes his hand, and she eventually the protesters. This does not help the situation and can escalate from there.

As a visitor to Thailand would not be a holiday or any time at all in Bangkok, where the bombs come out and control of military and / or the police on the streets of events. It 'just a badIdea. Not sure, and you'll have a good time. Once you have all come to Thailand to spend time in Bangkok itself, choose a time when peace reigns in the country, or leave it at least one small risk of violence.

Another area that often is not even sure - and now is not the deep south. Muslim separatists in the southern provinces of Thailand have a violent campaign against both Thai Muslims and Thai Buddhists who believe that are not part of his radical improvementsOrganization. There are about 3,000 deaths in the South in recent years, though not aware of the fact that foreigners have been killed yet. Thailand tourism officials do not recommend that foreign nationals to visit the southern provinces, and it would be wise to limit your travel to other provinces.

Natural disasters such as the devastating tsunami in 2004 have the opportunity to check at any time, but the odds seem high, it will occur again in similarThailand anytime soon.

Pattaya, Patong Beach, Patpong and full of tourists from other areas that could be bad news in the night. There are robberies and assaults that occur during the night, but if you're not one of those girls or ladyboys bar fine for a night of fun in your room you will probably be in order. There are a number of things you should know the Thai culture - that goes far beyond this article. In my last paragraph of this article, I'll give you another resource to help youimmense.

Pattaya is safe? Sometimes. It Patong Beach? In most cases, certainly Pattaya, yes. Patpong is safe? Not so sure, as a rule, no, I'm not sure.

Your experience may change during the trip, if you plan to use the carnival adult entertainment in Thailand. You can also see themselves and the hospital or you can have a perfectly safe time to indulge in the face of outrageous nocturnal activities. It 'difficult for me to give a statement about the coverThailand if it is safe for all men because all men are different.

The last time anyone dares hypothesis, there were about 100,000 foreigners in Thailand, as a long-term expatriates, more than a holiday. In a year when not a lot of political struggle in Bangkok there are more than 12 million foreign tourists each year to enjoy the country. Very few of them have a problem with their physical safety, while they are here. Most of them are still a bit 'Precautions. Many of them are frequent visitors.

Visit or stay in Thailand can be dangerous, or may be relatively safe and enjoyable. Probably the biggest factor in the equation is you. If you're the type who tries hard and trying not to care for, you should avoid in Thailand. If you have any experience in the country, probably do yourself a favor most important exploration of Thai culture and the experiences of foreigners inCountry.

See Bangkok, knows Thailand

if u want to know Thailand , See Bangkok..Next to the Royal Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, there is a vast open ground called Sanam Luang or Thung Phra Men. There may not be much going on, but Sanam Luang has some historical significance. At the time when Bangkok was first established, the ground was a rice field and was sometimes used as a location for a royal crematorium, Phra Men in Thai. The ground was, thus, otherwise called as ‘Thung Phra Men’ which means the crematorium ground. In considering that the name was inauspicious, King Rama IV had the ground renamed as ‘Thong Sanam Luang’, or the Royal Ground, and the rice farming there cancelled. The area is used for various public events, most notably for political activities during election time. It is still also used as a crematorium for the high-ranking Royal family members.

If you have a few hours to kill in the afternoon, there are a few places around the Grand Palace that is worth seeing.

Wat Mahathat
This old temple was built in the reign of King Rama I. Located on Na Phrathat Road near Thammasat University, the temple houses Mahachulalongkorn Buddhist University, one of the two highest seats of Buddhist learning in Thailand and also offers meditation classes for foreigners.

The City Pillar Shrine.
According to an old Thai tradition, a city pillar had to be built upon the establishment of a new city. King Rama I had the Bangkok city pillar erected near the Temple of the Emerald Buddha on Sunday, 21 April, 1782, with the city’s horoscope inside. The original pillar was made of cassia wood known as Chaiyaphruek, measuring 75 cm. in diameter and 27 cm. high. In the reign of King Rama IV, the old dilapidated pillar was replaced by a new one made of the same kind of wood, measuring 270 cm. high and standing on a base of 175 cm. wide, sheltered by a Prang-shaped shrine as it appears today. The shrine also houses images of protective deities including Thepharak, Chaopho Ho Klong, Phra Suea Mueang, Phra Song Mueang, Chaopho Chetakhup and Phra Kan Chai Si.
Open: Daily Admission: Free

The National Theatre , located on Na Phra That Road next to the National Museum, is the official centre of Thai classical performance.

Patravadi Theatre is near Wat Rakhang, Thon Buri. Renowned for its lavish productions, this outdoor theatre has gained popularity through its modern adaptations of classical Asian literature, with each play demonstrating an ingenious blend of various theatrical techniques. The theatre also operate a riverside restaurant with some great view and tasty Thai food.

Sightseeing in Quito, Ecuador

The capital of Ecuador is Quito - a beautiful city built in the mountains. For those who have vertigo Telefonica take the cable car on the base of the volcano Pinchincha a splendid panorama of the city. Dura at 2800 m height above sea level in the city a little 'getting used to! Quito, is in two parts very different - Split old and new. Quito Old Town is very beautiful and throughout Europe - many, iflarge squares, beautiful churches, narrow streets paved with pastel-colored buildings surrounded. The new city is more facilities, souvenir shops, banks, tour operators, luxury hotels, restaurants and bars, but their appearance has nothing on the old town. Most people choose to remain in the new city, as it is safer after dark and closer to the nightlife backpacker.

30k is just outside of Quito Mitad del Mundo - the center of the earth (you can take the bus from the northBus between the old and new districts of the city) - The situation in Ecuador on the equator is the origin of its name. Mitad del Mundo is a monument, which was considered the place to 0 degrees longitude is 0 degrees latitude. Unfortunately, the monument to the builders has turned out that years later, the real point at which this happens in reality, about 200 meters from the monument - but is certainly still a nice place to visit, andto take the obligatory photos at the center "of the Earth." This is an interesting museum inside the monument to think of all the indigenous communities in Ecuador - there are many more than we can!

The beautiful 67k Papallacta is located just east of Quito, on the same path in 1542 by Spanish conquistador Francisco Orellana, as he crossed the Andes to discover the Amazon. On3300 meters above sea level, the views from the heart of the mountains of the Andes are amazing - a little 'andrenalin filled bus ride, but be prepared, and people are afraid of heights should not the window! The value of hydrothermal vents is Termperature Papallacta because of its location between two volcanoes Cayambe & Antisana - springs to leave home varies from 30 degrees to 70 degrees and the pools 36-40 desgrees. A highlight of a tripin Ecuador is in a pool of hot water, dug into the rock, surrounded by the fog clings to the peaks of the Andes - is breathtaking. The Ecuadorean Medical Council certifies that the water has medicinal benefits and a fantastic spa and a variety of massages and treatments of your choice at reasonable prices are guaranteed to make you feel like a new man. You have to stay asComplex is far from any other - there are no budgetary options, at the foot of the road to the baths is a road about 2 miles (a) the city has 32 rooms with heating, fireplace, private bath and baths. Find Friends backpacker different in Quito and head back and save a group at cost.

You can fly from Quito to the Galapagos, which had provided that you have the money not lose! The Galapagos Islands are a wonderful approximately1000 km off the coast of Ecuador. They live and exceed all expectations - the bar are generally based on programs beautiful animals are very high! The only drawback is that a 1-week travel problems will set back a bit 'from € 1k - € 1.5k - but if the resources are worth every penny. The wildlife here is so numerous and so at home with people who are on the side, by the end of the weekYou sit fire almost eat your dinner with a sea lion at your feet! I am happy to exploit the experience gained from the first moment of the plan and cross the track at the "Airport" (wooden hut covered with oilcloth) gain over the iguanas sleep, enjoy the warmth of tarmack, as you go. The wildlife is amazing, and it will be closer than you ever imagined - from blue-footed boobies receive up to hugeTurtles, pelicans, penguins, flamingos, iguanas, sharks, dolphins and whales - that will blow your mind! Ecosystems different on each island are fascinating and, if you can land a ride, you can get some of the larger islands of residence, rather than simply dealing with the masses on a cruise "trip type, it's worth it. Do not miss the many highlights on the island of Isabella, like walking on a field of lava and through the lava tube (make sureCheck for warnings, but the volcano - this is still very active!). Tip ensure - that the passport stamp - must be one of if not the best in the world .... We will not spoil a surprise!

From inland terminal in the historic center of Quito, you need a bus to the small mountain town of Latacunga - here you can organize trips to the sea and Cotopaxi Quilatoa. Cotopaxi Volcano is breathtaking & Picture Perfect - asks a child to draw a volcano and itsEfforts would look Cotopaxi! E 'possible to climb the volcano - for the less adventurous you can follow the path (one vertically to 4800 m above sea level) to base camp and from there the beginning of the glacier. Alternatively, if it remains a challenge - you can decide at the base camp during the night and peak at Level 4 with crampons - a great challenge and experience! Quilatoa lake is beautiful - a crater lake with an underwater very inviting, but completely filledtoxic turquoise waters and surrounded by alpaca pasture. The journey from Latacunga to the lake is one of the best in South America, offers beautiful scenery and rare insight into indigenous communities will be transmitted on the road.

The hours of departure the next goal is to Riobamba, where you can board the train spectacular - the Nariz Diablo (Devil's nose) at the end of this train are wonderful, but they are unpredictable and the city itself offers very little in way thatbefore arrival. A shipment worth Riobamba is the trip by mountain bike Chimborazzo - Ecuador's highest volcano at 6300 m at the summit. The climb is not as steep as Cotopaxi, despite the higher altitude and is therefore an easy climb. The views are mountain bike down Chimborazzo are breathtaking, but ready for a ride irregular!

The spa town of Banos is worth a visit - not far from the baths themselves, however, expect the city is full ofCharacter, and for those on horseback, there are some trips to admire the beautiful surroundings.

Thai Food

Thai food has become in recent years one of the world's favorite cuisines. When we speak of "Thai food", we are in fact talking of four very distinct regions in the country, each with their own culinary traditions. We are speaking too of the dishes created in the royal courts and palaces of Old Siam, that have been passed down through many generations of chefs, and finally into public domain.
Good food also comes up from the street level, and many of Thailand's most popular dishes can be found at the smallest food stalls and restaurants. And there is the influence of China, India, Malaysia and other neighbouring countries. So all these different factors come together under the label "Thai food", and you will find them in varying degrees at any Thai restaurant you care to visit, anywhere in the world.

One of the most distinctive aspects of the cuisine is its use of herbs and spices. With regard to the spices, some Thai dishes are very hot, but by no means all of them. The herbs have another function, in addition to providing flavour, in that they all have to varying degrees various medical and therapeutic benefits.

Thailand has a long history, going back to ancient times, of the use of herbs for medical purpose, and this in turn has permeated the ways of cooking and preparing food. Coupled with its low-fat qualities and its essential freshness, this helps make thai food one of the healthiest anywhere. Another important aspect about Thai food is the hospitality and friendiness, the sheer enjoyment of good companionship and of eating that is such a powerful element of the Thai personality. Sharing a meal is an important part of the day for any Thai person, and meal are very seldom taken alone. That is why all the dishes are generally served at once during Thai meal, and why there is a communal spoon placed alongside each dish for people to help themselves and to serve others.

A Thai meal ideally is a communal affair, principally because the greater the number of dinners the greater the number of dishes that can be sampled. Diners choose what ever they require from share dishes and generally add it to their own plate of rice. All the dish are serve simultaneously, or nearly so. The object is to archive a harmonious blend of the spicy, the subtle, the sweet and sour, and a meal is meant to be equally satisfying to the eye, nose and palate.

Thailand is blessed with many varieties of plants, herbs and spices which ensure s balanced diet. Today, visitors can both relish classic Thai menus and the benefits of a natural diet, and study the art of Thai cooking at several specialist schools in Bangkok and major beach resorts.

A food Tour of Bangkok part 1

Rob Ryan's rundown of the beat eateries begins in Chinatown, with celebrated chef David Thomspon in tow

Why did my trip around Bangkok with David Thomspon start in Chinatown, rather than a Thai area?

Well, Thomspon is not just a Michelin-starred chef, he is also an archeologist of Thai cuisine, an Indiana Jones of the palate, delving into the distant origins of dishes and the evolution of Asian cooking methods.

Much of his knowledge derived from his habit of buying ancient cookbooks from the royal kitchens or 19th-century memorial volumes for high-ranking individuals, which often included the deceased’s favourite recipes. (When he first visited Bangkok, these were relatively cheap).

His fascination with Chinatown stems from these explorations, tracing how ingredients and techniques were adopted – and improved – by Thais, to create a whole new repertoire of recipes.

Plus, Chinatown has some of the most atmospheric, intact streets in the city (but look up as you walk about – most of the tell-tale detail is on the second and third floors).

For a soft-landing in the midst of Chinatown, start at T&K Seafood (49-51 Thanon Phadung Dao, aka Soi Texas, at the junction with Yaow’arat), just to get your bearings.

Big, brusque and bustling, it doesn’t have the best food on the strip – quality has dipped as popularity has grown - but for a beer and maybe a plate of crab fried rice (there is an English menu or garish photos), it does service as somewhere to get your bearings, as a meeting point when converging from different directions and for people-watching. There is a similar establishment, Rut & Lek, on the opposite corner.

If you head west you will come to Thanon Plaengnam, with its variety of pungent street stalls. Look for the one making the offal soup. It will be a huge bowl of broth with spleen, liver and intestines and is powerful stuff. ‘Coolie food,’ David Thompson calls it, made with the leftovers the Thais didn’t want and ground zero for all street stall dishes: a cheap, fast way to feed the workers. (If you baulk at the ingredients, there are plenty of other options flanking that outlet).

From there head north, down increasingly crepuscular streets, with a stall seemingly at the head of each gloomy soi or alley, backed by a collection of rickety tables, with shadowy diners slurping in the dark. We picked up some delicious chive spring rolls from one vendor.

Cross over busy, lethal Charoen Krung (New Road) and you will be on Thanon Phlappia Chai, home of the crispy oyster omelette. (Note that the Thais aren’t good on addresses – they tend to give directions, using landmarks such as temples, monuments or stores.)

The bustling restaurant on your right (number 547) is the one for smoked duck (bpet rom kwam) and the minced pork (muu sap nahm liap); expect to pay around £3-4pp, with beers, for a couple of large plates of each to share, plus rice. English is far from the lingua franca, but much of food is displayed in pots or on slabs and you can simply point. But it might be a good move to ask your hotel to write down the names of some dishes in Thai script.

Also consider picking up a copy of Nancy Chandler’s Map of Bangkok (available from Stanford’s or Amazon or see www.nancychandler.net), a colourful and chaotic product that, nevertheless, once you learn how to navigate it, has invaluable close-up displays of several city sections, including Chinatown
